WSOP celebrates third largest event ever

By Mad Harper

With Day 1c now in the history books, the WSOP has confirmed its third largest field ever, with 7,221 players creating a massive $67,877,400 prize pool, to be shared by the top 1,084 players. The winner will get $8,150,000 – or a cool $10 million if they are a 888poker qualifier. Everyone who reaches the final table is guaranteed $1 million.

WSOP TD Jack Effel said: “I think that it’s amazing on all fronts. The third largest Main Event in history: 7,221 players, huge field, huge prize pool, lots of people getting paid, lots of people making money!

"The Main Event is a special tournament, and I will tell you, whether you're playing with 100 people or 10,000 people, it's the most special tournament on the planet. Of course, $8.15 million is life-changing money and all of that, but winning the Main Event, being one of only 48 people to ever do it, actually it's less because of the duplicates, so knowing you will forever be immortalized as poker's world champion, I think, is a feat in itself.”

As the remaining players prepare for Day 2, Britain’s Lawrence Bayley and Sam Grafton are right up among the chip leaders. Bayley has 247,400 and currently in third place while Grafton has 231,600.

Grosvenor Ambassador Jeff Kimber had a fruitful Day 1c and ended with 124,000. Also still in is MainEventTravel.com CEO Fraser MacIntyre. He wrote: “Made it through to day 2 of the WSOP main event with 74,100 chips. Back on Wednesday to try and make day 3!” Max Silver, who won his first WSOP bracelet this summer after taking down the $3k Limit Hold’em 6-Handed event is also through with 85,300 – along with GUKPT Passport winner Andy Hills on 121,000, British high roller Talal Shakerchi on 103,000, JP Kelly on 76,000 and Triple Crown winner Jake Cody has 55,600.

Jason Mercier was totally outgunned by his wife Natasha on Day 1c – she bagged up 218,000 while Jason, one of the world’s most successful live tournament players ever, has 28,500.His total live tournament winnings amount to nearly $20 million.
