Volpe leads for Day 3 of WPT Bay 101

By Mad Harper

American pro Paul Volpe is leading the last 44 players in the WPT Bay 101 Main Event. Volpe was pretty short-stacked on the bubble but took advantage of bubble play and post-bubble action to end the day with 1,749,000. His nearest rival is Dan O’Brien, who bagged up 1,339,000.

Next stop: WPT Rolling Thunder  starting March 11. We are the tour’s Official Travel Partner so do check for hotel deals here.

Veteran WPT commentator and Hall of Famer Mike Sexton is also still in, and on something of a tear since his WPT Montreal victory in November. That was his first ever WPT title, but he made the final table of the WPT LA Poker Classic last week and is now in good shape to snatch the lead for Hublot WPT Player of the Year title.

“On the money bubble, I was down to 30,000,” Sexton recalled. He managed to triple up, double up, double up, and double up again to stay alive - and goes in to Day 3 with 391,000.

Also still thriving are British pro Charlie Carrel, Matt Affleck, Spanish powerhouse Sergio Aido, David Williams and EPT Prague champion Stephen Graner.

There were 806 total entries, which has resulted in a prize pool of more than $5.7 million with 81 players getting paid. Everyone is guaranteed at least $21,850, but they will all be vying for a seat at the televised final table where everyone will be taking home at least $188,466 and someone will go home with a $1,373,000 payday, a seat in the season-ending Tournament of Champions, and their name etched on the Champions Cup.
