By Mad Harper

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Tito Ortiz is second in chips in the PokerStars Championship Panama Main Event.  Ortiz, who reportedly has eight figures in career earnings from his UFC career, is now embarking on a new career at the poker tables.

Next stop: PokerStars Championship Macau, March 30 – April 9.

Ortiz, shown here with Brazilian star Felipe Ramos, ran his 30,000-chip starting stack into 182,000 by end of Day 1a yesterday, good enough for second place overall. By the time the clock ran out, 43 players remained from yesterday’s field, with Ukrainian pro Igor Yaroshevskyy and his stack of 219,600 chips leading the pack. Yaroshevskyy, 8th at the recent WPT Bay 101 event, has nearly $2.4 million in live tournament earnings.

There were 103 players for yesterday’s Day 1a. American pro Jason Koon is also thriving on 175,500. Other counts are: Steve O'Dwyer (117,000), David Peters (116,100), Ryan Riess (77,300), Byron Kaverman (72,200), Daniel Dvoress (59,800), Sergio Aido (54,200), Anthony Zinno (16,800), and David Kitai (10,900).
