Ben Winsor becomes first two-time GUKPT Grand Final champion

By Mad Harper

British poker pro Ben Winsor has become the first-ever two-time GUKPT Grand Final champion after defeating a 273-entry field in last weekend’s €2,500 event. Winsor’s victory gives him a great head start in the GUKPT Player of the Year leaderboard with a 20-point lead over nearest rival Dost Ghrabie.

Ben Winsor started Sunday’s final table at the Poker Room at the iconic Vic Casino as the chip leader and swiftly converted his pole position into yet another GUKPT Main Event victory. The final table was completed at breakneck speed, with eight players eliminated in just two hours.

Along with the coveted GUKPT trophy, Winsor snagged a career-best cash of £188,610 while Leo Boisbaudry from France got £123,740 for his runner-up finish. A total of 26 players were paid from the £682,500 prize pool including two-time WSOP Main Event finalist Antoine Saout, British players Tom Hall and Andrew Christoforou, Morten Mortensen, Javier Zapatero, Daiva Byrne, Laurence Houghton and Ollie Price.

Winsor, who hails from Margate, now has close to $1.5 million in live tournament winnings including his other Grand Final victory in 2015 and GUKPT Walsall in 2014.

The GUKPT Player of the Year contest, also known as the National Poker League, is now off to a cracking start with five 2021 Diamond GUKPT Packages up for grabs for leaderboard winners. The contest awards points to players taking part in any of the ‘Grosvenor Presents’ live poker tournaments as well as selected online events – a total of some 150 different tournaments during the year, including the GUKPT, Deepstack and 25/25 Series.

The next GUKPT takes place in London from January 26 to February 2. This will be GUKPT’s 14th season with over £1.6 million in prize pool guarantees over nine events.

As well as winning a stunning Grosvenor Casinos Player of the Year trophy, the GUKPT Player of the Year winner receives a lucrative £14,000 “Diamond GUKPT package” which includes entry into all nine GUKPT 2021 Main Events plus buy-ins for other selected Grosvenor tournaments, a £2,000 accommodation package and coveted Grosvenor merchandise and goodie bag. Last season’s winner was Richard Kellet who triumphed after finishing the year on 548.65 points.
