GUKPT Luton underway; Main Event starts Thursday

By Mad Harper

GUKPT Luton – Leg 4 of the GUKPT’s 13th season – is now underway with the £100,000 Main Event starting on Thursday.

The overall festival kicked off on Saturday with the popular £10,000 Mini Main tournament. The £500 + £60 buy-in Main Event takes place June 6-9 with unlimited re-entries. Players get a 20,000 starting stack and 60 minute levels. This year’s schedule also includes an £110 Omaha 4/5/6 event, several NL tournaments and a £110 50/50 Bounty tournament – plus, of course, lots of satellites and cash games.

MainEvent Travel sponsors the GUKPT all in triangles so do look out for them on the live stream from Leg 4 in Luton.

GUKPT Luton starts June 2 is always a very well-attended event – and a destination that’s been on the GUKPT calendar since the very start of the tour in 2007. The Luton stop usually takes place in the Summer or Autumn but this year, for the very first time, the GUKPT tour is in Bedfordshire twice in one season (the second GUKPT Luton stop is Leg 7 of GUKPT 2019 in October.)

One of the highlights of this year's Luton schedule is Event 3, a £2,500 Cash Game Giveaway. Between 6pm to 4am on Wednesday, June 5, £250 will be awarded every hour to the highest ranked cash game hand. Hold’em and Omaha Cash tables are both included in the promotion and the prize money will be split proportionally depending on how many tables are being played in each variant.

Some big names have been emerged victorious at previous editions of GUKPT Luton; the roll call of previous winners includes the likes of Dave Clark, Sam Trickett, Richard Gryko, Neil Channing, Charles Chattha, Jamie O’Connor, Adam Reynolds and John Eames, while Driton Haxhiaj has won twice – in both 2013 (for £42,750) and three years later in 2016 for £61,520.

Last year’s Main Event was won by recreational player Neil Mcfayden. The 36-year-old New Zealand, who works in finance, enjoyed by far his biggest live tournament victory and a career-best cash of £58,326. He snagged the trophy after a heads-up battle with GUKPT stalwart Yiannis Liperis (who later went on to win GUKPT Blackpool.) There were 304 entries overall generating a £303,796 prize pool, a good 50% up on the Main Event £200k guarantee.

Don’t miss the rest of this year’s GUKPT. After GUKPT Luton, the GUKPT returns to London for one of the most popular stops of the year. GUKPT Leeds (Leg 6) is in September, GUKPT Luton - Leg 7 is October, GUKPT Blackpool - Leg 8 in November, and the GUKPT Grand Final runs November 18 to December 1.

The GUKPT is Grosvenor Poker’s flagship tour and the longest-running poker tour in the UK. 2019 is the GUKPT’s 13th consecutive season and promises to provide another record-breaking year with nine action-packed legs around the country – with a combined prize pool guarantee of £1,700,000. Buy-ins range from £500+60 to £2,500+150 with guarantees totalling between £100,000 and £500,000.
