Chris Johnson wins GUKPT Luton for £48,570

By Mad Harper

Chris Johnson has won his second GUKPT title after taking down GUKPT Luton for £48,570. Johnson, who started Day 3 with a monster chip lead, put on a final table masterclass to secure a compelling victory. Kev Allen succumbed in second place for £36,340 while Rob Boon, who started the day as the short stack, managed to ladder his way up to a third-place finish and £25,170 payday.

Johnson, who has now accrued well over $750,000 in live tournament winnings, has thrived at Grosvenor tournaments including victory in Leeds in 2022 and a fourth place at GUKPT London in 2021. Last October he was fifth at GUKPT Coventry and this year’s achievements include a runner-up finish in the UKPL High Roller in Coventry in January and winning the Walsall 25/50 in February.

The finalists (pictiured above) in Luton included fourth-placed Trevor Reardon, Keith Johnson, 2022 Player of the Year Matt Davenport (who was on his third consecutive Main Event final table and finished 8th) and GUKPT Edinburgh champion Paul Mcaulay. Among the others who cashed were 888poker LIVE London runner-up Francis Obadun, Sinead Priestley and defending Luton champion Stuart Rutter. There were 212 entries overall creating a prize pool of £218,870 with 29 players paid.

Cal soars even further!

2023 Player of the Year Cal Morreale increased his lead in this year’s National Poker League still further at GUKPT Luton with a runner-up finish in the very first event of the festival - the £200 GUKPT Luton Opener. Cal snagged £9,960 for second place while winner Reon Staples took £13,395. In third place was Sinead Priestley who is also on a tear after winning the GUKPT Edinburgh Cup last month (beating Cal heads-up) and finishing 16th in the Edinburgh Main Event. Priestley, who got £6,830, definitely thrives in Luton – she won the 888poker UKPL Luton Opening Voyage tournament in March for £17,865.

The Luton festival, which ran April 25 to May 6, was the first Luton stop of the year but the GUKPT will be back for GUKPT Luton - Leg 8 in September. 2024 marks the 18th year of GUKPTs with over £10,000,000 expected to be paid out over the 12 festivals being held this season.
