Aspers Winter Festival smashes Main Event records again

By Mad Harper

The Aspers Stratford Winter Festival has smashed records once again with a £212,140 prize pool for the Main Event.

The latest champion is Hang Xu who has more than doubled his previous live tournament winnings in one fell swoop with a bumper prize of £42,220. There were a total of 405 entries in the Main Event which marked a year of the new seasonal festivals at Asper’s Casino Stratford.

In the Main Event, the prize pool made a staggering £212,140 with 45 places paid. A min cash was worth £1,100 and the bubble finally burst close to 11pm on Day 2. The £600 buy-in tournament came with a £120,000 guaranteed prize pool but the huge volume of entries quickly smashed that. Denas Pranaitis, who won the Autumn Fest Warm-Up event finished third for £20,110 while Brazilian pro Alex Gomes was fifth for £11k. Will Kassouf also made the money – £2,300 for 17th place – and Greek pro Alexios Zervos was 18th, also for £2,300.

The packed schedule featured 15 tournaments in total from January 24 to February 5. Aleksandrs Golubevs won the High Roller for £22,120. Former EPT London and WPT Barcelona finalist Martins Adeniya is working his way up to the title – he finished fifth in the Autumn Fest High Roller and was runner-up this time around for £14,970. Alessandro Acampora, Alex Goulder, Janos Nemeth and Gary Miller all made the money with a min-cash worth £3,400.

Other events on the packed schedule included a ton of satellites along the Progressive Bounty, 4/5/6 PLO event and a £150 + £150 + £40 Mystery Bounty tournament. MainEventTravel.com rooted on train conductor Michael London in the Warm Up event. Michael won a £500 Warm Up Package (£250 buy-in plus £250 MET travel credit) in a special MET Facebook promotion. London put his buy-in to good use by making the final table of the Warm Up and finishing in 8th place for £1,365 – his first cash at Aspers Stratford. The Warm Up kicked off the festival with over 220 entries, and nearly £50k in the prize pool, more than double the guarantee.

Aspers Customer Services Manager Janis Mozajevs said: “The festivals just keep getting better and better! This was a great turnout and everyone enjoyed themselves. Congrats to our new champion and we are now looking forward to the next event.”

As well as its new seasonal festivals featuring £560 buy-in Main Events, Aspers Stratford is well-known for hosting regular tournaments at the casino. Wednesday’s £60 buy-in features unlimited re-entries. Thursday, Friday and Saturday’s tourneys have a maximum of two re-entries.
